DALAW 2010 official entry Metro Manila Film Fest 2010

I was curious why DALAW did not receive any nomination from the Metro Manila Film Fest 2010 judges. So I decided to watch this film to be able to give my verdict to the said movie, after all they say Kris is the queen of horror movie.

“Dalaw” is the story of Stella (Kris Aquino), a widow of four years whose violent husband died in a car accident while they were quarreling. She is now set to marry her high school sweetheart Anton (Diether Ocampo) with whom she has recently reconnected. From then however, Stella’s life becomes a living hell when a mud-coated ghost haunts her dreams. After their wedding, the torment escalates as actual deaths began to occur among the people around her. Stella, with the help of a spooky neighbor with a “third eye” Aling Olga (Ms. Gina Pareno), needs to discover how to stop the malevolent terror from destroying her life.

Kris Aquino just had her signature pained look plastered throughout the whole movie. She has not really progressed in her facial expressions through all these horror films she had. The way she shouts her son’s name Paolo and her anguished harsh screams were so over-the-top. A very big problem of the film was that Kris and Diether had absolutely NO chemistry. Their whole relationship as high school sweethearts was not believable at all. Their kissing scenes were very awkward-looking. This made the central premise of the story very shaky indeed. Come to think of it, Kris looked ill at ease with all the other actors as well.

A lot of the scary scenes were derivative. Some of the death scenes have already been done in previous films of the same genre, like the one in the sauna. The supporting character of Gina Pareno was written and executed in a comic horror style. Her Aling Olga looked like Mrs. Ganush of “Drag Me To Hell.” She likes quoting classic lines from Filipino movies when she makes her ominous pronouncements, which can be funny, but some of the humor is forced. Her exit was also very poorly written and realized. Among the other supporting actors, only Karylle made any kind of impact.

The movie was shot in very poor light. It seemed like most of the movie happened during the twilight to evening hours, which made a lot of scenes very hard to see. It was very strange that no one seemed to need to turn on the house lights at night! The director Dondon Santos depended heavily on typical horror effects like sudden camera shifts, dreary funereal music and too much darkness to achieve his scares. The final resolution had a corny feel to it because Kris was obviously fighting a solid “ghost”. Overall this movie was a dissatisfaction in the list of Kris Aquino horror films.

Magkaribal- Gelai Agustin VS Victoria Valera

Magkaribal Book1

Magkaribal Book1

A new and budding fashion designer named Gelai Agustin (Bea Alonzo) is Victoria Valera’s (Gretchen Barretto) long lost sister. Anna/Victoria and Angela/Gelai were orphaned at a young age, separated by a series of events and brought together again. Angela was adopted by a simple couple and her adoptive father re-named her “Gelai”. Anna was also adopted by a wealthy business man and was re-named Victoria. The story also follows Mixed Martial Arts Champion, Louie (Derek Ramsay) who discovers that Gelai is really Angela, the girl he met when they were both kidnapped as children.

Angela and Anna’s mother, Stella (Dimples Romana), was a seamstress while their father, Manuel (James Blanco/Mark Gil), went to Milan to work. While in Milan, Manuel met and fell in love with a wealthy model and a fashion designer named Vera Cruz (Angel Aquino). When Manuel went back to the Philippines, Stella got very angry at him because he never replied to her letters. Manuel explained the situation and Stella forgave him. Soon, Manuel decided to leave his wife and children to live with Vera. Later, Vera and Manuel adopt a girl named Chloe (Erich Gonzales) after Vera has a miscarriage that leaves her unable to have children. She blames her circumstances on Anna/Victoria.

Angela and Anna witnessed Manuel and Vera hugging; this led to a confrontation between Anna and Vera where Vera pushed and injured Anna. In tears, Anna returned home and showed her wounded arm to her mother and later, Stella went to Vera’s house to confront her but Vera avoided her. As Vera drove away, Stella was accidentally hit and killed by an oncoming vehicle; Anna was there to witnessed the tragedy unfold.

Orphaned and on the run from people trying to place them into an orphanage, Angela and Anna lived on streets. Angela soon gets sick from eating garbage and was rushed to the hospital by her older sister, Anna. To earn money, the 15-year-old Anna worked as a prostitute. One day, she returned to the hospital only to see that it was on fire, with her sister nowhere to be found and most likely dead. As it turns out, Angela was actually kidnapped by men who made children work as beggars on the streets. This is where Angela became friends with a little boy, “Dos” (the future Louie), who was also a captive. Devastated and alone, Anna was adopted by Ronaldo Valera (Robert Arevalo) and was sent abroad.

Years later, Angela as Gelai Agustin, becomes a poor designer that continues both her and her sister’s dreams of becoming top Philippine designers. Anna who is now Victoria Valera becomes an international model and designer who gets revenge on Vera Cruz by stealing her place as the top Philippine designer and trying to take over Vera’s company; all in the name of keeping her and her sister’s dreams alive.

10 killer lines from Vera and Victoria.

Magkaribal is dramatic and decadent, the best kind of escapist entertainment.

 1. “Love is a liability. It makes you do the most stupid things. Punyetang pagmamahal ‘yan!” -Victoria to Ronaldo (Robert Arevalo), her adoptive father
 2. “Sinasabi ko na nga ba! Everybody bows down to the queen.” -Vera to her employees, after being told that Victoria has backed out of a fashion show.

3.“You want war? I’ll give you war. Sabihin mo lang kung saan at kailan. I’ll be there in my red stilettos.” -Victoria to Vera, when the former goes to the latter’s office to confront her

4. “That sneaky, social-climbing whore! If it’s a showdown Victoria wants…then ‘yun ang ibibigay ko sa kanya.” -Vera talking about Victoria

5. “I have been in the fashion business for three decades. Boss ako. Designer ka. Kung sinabi kong tumalon ka, tatalon ka. Kung ‘di mo kaya, umalis ka.“ -Vera to Gelai (Bea Alonzo), a young designer who’s also Victoria’s long-lost sister (though none of them know it yet)

6. “Oh, my dear evil, aging stepmother, I’m not just looking for any kind of job. I already have one. Now, I want yours.” -Victoria to Vera

7. “If Victoria wants to play dirty, then I can roll in the mud with her.” -Vera to Donna (Nina Ricci Alagao), her assistant and favorite confidante

Model-actress Angel Aquino is anything but an angel when she plays Vera Cruz.

8. “Basta ako, ayaw ko ng laban that would take years in court. I want Vera’s quick and painful downfall. That’s how I’ll get her.” -Victoria to Ronaldo

9. “Kulang na kulang pa ‘yan Vera, dahil isinusumpa ko sa ‘yo: pagbabayaran mo lahat ng ginawa mo sa akin. Kukunin ko lahat ng ninakaw mo sa akin. Wala akong ititira sa ‘yo, maski na pangalan mo.“ -Victoria to Vera, in a confrontation scene staged in the ladies’ room

10. “What are we, Louie? Aren’t we just two people having sex?” -Victoria to Louie (Derek Ramsay), her boy toy

The series first aired on the WB and then was moved to UPN for its final season

Living among the citizens of the infamous New Mexico city of Roswell are some who are not there by choice. They are there to follow a destiny given to them by the members of their dying race, a race that they are someday destined to save. This is the background behind the WB series “Roswell”. Max Evans, Isabel Evans and Michael Guerin are teenage humans with extraordinary gifts – gifts that are “not-of-this-earth”. They are human/alien hybrids, sent here to complete their destiny. Their counterparts have already perished in a war of attrition, thus one day, they will return to their home planet and save their race. Before a fateful day in 1999, the teens hid their gifts. The event that forever changed their lives was when Max healed Liz Parker (a classmate) after she was fatally shot in the stomach in a dispute between two customers at the restaurant where she waitresses. A close relationship then develops between Max and Liz. Central to the first season were the relationships between the hybrids and their human companions. That focus has shifted during the drama’s second season. “Roswell” is now distinctly a science-fiction show built on the relationships between humans and aliens

forever CHARMED

forever CHARMED

Three sisters – Prue, Piper and Phoebe Halliwell – reunite in their ancestral home, Halliwell Manor. When the youngest sister, Phoebe, ventures into the previously-locked attic, she recites a passage from an ancient book which unlocks their dormant powers to transform them into The Charmed Ones -… More the most powerful witches ever to exist. Now they must vanquish evil and save innocent lives while living their own lives as normal women in the real world. Life isn’t so easy when you’re Charmed.
Charmed is an American television series that ran for eight seasons on The WB. It was produced by Aaron Spelling and is about three sisters who are the world’s most powerful good witches, known throughout the supernatural community as “The Charmed Ones” but known to everyone else as the Halliwells. Each sister possesses unique magical powers that grow and evolve over the course of their lives. The Charmed Ones live together in a manor and use their supernatural abilities to battle the warlocks, demons and other evil forces that populate San Francisco, California, to protect the innocent and good magical beings.
In Season 4, half-sister (and half-Whitelighter) Paige replaces the dearly departed Prue in The Power of Three.
In season 8, a life-or-death decision forces the sisters to fake their deaths and take a young witch named Billie into their care to help them fight the evil forces that once threatened their existence so that they could maintain the ‘normal’ lives for which they had spent the last 7 years fighting to regain.
To keep them safe from harm, the Charmed ones bring the remaining innocents back to the manor. But little do they know the Source has returned and cast a spell turning every innocent in the entire city against them…Even as they fight to survive, the Charmed Ones learn that the source has planned his arrival at the perfect time to destroy the power of three once and for all

In January 2006, with the airing of “Payback’s a Witch”, Charmed became the longest running show with all-female leads, surpassing Laverne & Shirley. The series ended its run on May 21, 2006. The Charmed series finale, “Forever Charmed”, pulled in a season high of 4.49 million viewers.

the charmed

The first generation of Charmed Ones, from left to right: Piper (Holly Marie Combs), Prue (Shannen Doherty) and Phoebe (Alyssa Milano

The story Charmed began with the three Halliwell sisters — Prue, Piper and Phoebe — coming together six months after the death of their grandmother. Moving back into the family Manor in San Francisco, the youngest sister, Phoebe, discovered an old book — the Book of Shadows — in the attic. Reading an incantation from it, she unwittingly set in motion events that fulfilled an ancient prophecy. Strange and harrowing occurrences began which eventually led the sisters to realize that they are witches.

They discovered that not only do they possess supernatural powers, but they come from a long line of powerful witches. The first in the line, Melinda Warren, was burned at the stake in the Salem Witch Trials. However, before she died, Melinda prophesied that each coming generation of Warren (later Halliwell) witches would grow stronger and stronger, culminating in the arrival of three sisters — the strongest good witches the world had ever seen; the three sisters would form The Power of Three, the most powerful magical force ever.

new charmed

The second generation of Charmed Ones, from left to right: Piper (Holly Marie Combs), Phoebe (Alyssa Milano) and Paige (Rose McGowan

Prue Halliwell, the oldest sister, developed the power of telekinesis where she could move things with her mind, later gaining the power of astral projection, where she could essentially make a clone of herself appear wherever she desired. Piper, the middle child, was initially given the power to freeze “time” however she can only freeze molecules, she later develops the power to blow things up by speeding up molecules so they combust: molecular combustion. Phoebe, the youngest sister, had the original power of premonition, at first being able to see future events and later past events as well, and often is used to reveal the truth. She later obtained the power to levitate which let her defy gravity which was useful with her martial arts skills. Her empathic powers developed in later years where she could read the feelings and emotions of others. Phoebe could also affect the supernatural powers of other beings whose powers were tied to their emotions.

After the tragic death of Prue, it was revealed that the sisters had a younger half-sister named Paige, born to their mother Patty and Sam, her Whitelighter, a guardian angel for witches. As such a relationship was forbidden and unheard of at the time, the baby was given to a nun and later adopted by the Matthews family. Her birth parents requested only that her first name begin with ‘P’, to continue the tradition. From her whitelighter father, Paige inherited the power to “orb”. This also had an effect on the powers she inherited from Patty: instead of telekinesis, Paige is able to call for an object; the object in question will then either orb to her or to a location she directs with her thoughts or gestures. Though this power requires the use of verbal commands, she has been able to do so silently when in a state of enhanced power, and in a few other instances. This power is called telekinetic orbing. In Season 5 Paige revealed that she also has other whitelighter powers, such as shapeshifting. Halfway through Season 8, Paige developed more of her whitelighter side by being able to heal and locate charges by sensing them.

A central theme throughout the show’s run is the sisters’ struggle to balance normal lives with their supernatural responsibilities. The burden of keeping their destinies a secret from the outside world has repeatedly created tensions in their friendships, workplaces, and romantic relationships. Only a few knew their secret and helped them on a regular basis. The most important is Leo Wyatt, a Whitelighter assigned by the Elders to guide and protect the sisters. Leo means a great deal to the sisters both professionally and personally: he heals their wounds, advises them collectively and individually, and mediates between them and the enigmatic Elders. He also becomes the love of Piper’s life, her husband and father of her children. Others who have kept the Charmed Ones’ secret over the years include policemen Andy Trudeau and Darryl Morris, tormented half-demon Cole Turner, the mysterious time-traveler Chris Perry, the sisters Christy and Billie Jenkins, and Paige’s husband, Henry Mitchell.

MEDIUM of Allison Dubois

7 Nov

An everyday housewife and mother with the extraordinary gift of being able to see into the past, the present and the future assists the D.A.’s office with solving cases.

Patricia Arquette as Allison Dubois
Jake Weber as Joe Dubois
Miguel Sandoval as D.A. Manuel Devalos
Sofia Vassilieva as Ariel Dubois
Maria Lark as Bridgette Dubois
David Cubitt as Detective Lee Scanlon

The show is based on the real experiences of psychic, Allison DuBois. Allison also serves as a consultant for the show.
Based on the life of real-life psychic, Allison DuBois, Medium allows us into the mind of this incredible woman and her journey into the “other side.”

Having the gift to communicate with dead people isn’t always easy. Allison (Patricia Arquette) is a regular wife and mother, trying to juggle a family, a career and an amazing gift. Learning to come to grips with this gift has taken a toll on Allison and her family – especially since Allison hasn’t learned how to control these communications.

When Allison proves her abilities to her boss, the D.A. (Miguel Sandoval), she is quietly put to work, helping to nab the criminals, free the innocent and track down missing victims. Allison’s work many times interferes with family, leaving her dedicated husband Joe (Jake Weber) to help care for their three girls.
Allison doesn’t go at her crime-solving alone. She receives a lot of support from her husband Joe, who was at first skeptical of her abilities, in part because he’s an aerospace engineer, but who now supports her and helps her out whenever he can. Joe and Allison must also raise their three daughters, while keeping them safe from possible dangers brought on by Allison’s abilities. Joe and Allison have discovered that Ariel, the eldest daughter, and Bridgette, the middle daughter, both have abilities like Allison, though their abilities don’t come into play as much as Allison’s do. Marie, the youngest daughter, is only a few years old, but she too has recently shown signs of special abilities.

Allison works at D.A. Manuel Devalos’ office, helping to solve crime and murder cases using her abilities. She often also works with Detective Lee Scanlon, whom she met last year and helped solve a crime he was personally involved in. Both D.A. Devalos and Det. Scanlon were at first very wary of Allison’s abilities, but they have come to trust her through the many crimes and murders she has helped them solve. The only catch is that Allison must keep her abilities secret because if they were revealed, the courts and authorities most likely wouldn’t take them as legitimate. As Allison gains the trust of D.A. Devalos and Det. Scanlon, she must continue to balance her supernatural life with her life at home, which she at times finds difficult, but manages to do with her husband Joe’s help and support.

As Allison and Joe’s daughters continue to grow, their psychic abilities show more and more development, keeping the DuBois’ home life busy and interesting. Through it all, Joe and Allison continue to balance their hectic home life with their professional lives — which seem to become more and more stressful as time goes on.
Will Allison finally learn to better control this incredible gift? Probably not anytime soon, but it certainly makes for great storytelling.
