Johnny Depp RETURNS in Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides

The box-office-busting Pirates of the Caribbean movies have been the most extraordinary milch cow, and since the first film came out in 2003, the executives at Disney and the megastar Johnny Depp have been wading around in milch up to their thighs. By the time this is all over, it could be up to their armpits.

Well, it’s a zany, muscular spectacle with a witty and sprightly lead performance and, frankly, there’s no sign of it ending any time soon. Without ever being billed as such, the POTC brand has turned into a multi-episode franchise like Harry Potter or 007, though unlike Potter, inexorably turning from moppet into loping teen as he did, Captain Sparrow does not change very much and in this movie is specifically tasked with uncovering the legendary fountain of eternal youth. Like Potter, however, Sparrow is evidently chary of committing himself too soon romantically.

In this lengthy episode, our Jack is discovered evading the hangman’s noose in Ye Olde London by various confusing and nefarious impostures, and then having one of his many uproarious chase scenes through the CGI landscape. He finds himself confronting an old rival, or possibly an old flame: fiery buccaneer Angelica, played by Penélope Cruz, who has been trying to pressgang a crew of ne’er-do-wells among the city taverns to set sail with the terrifying Blackbeard – who she claims is her father.

He is played by rumbling-voiced Ian McShane, whose face here attains the texture and consistency of a leathery old boot heel. Their mission is to find the waters of the legendary fountain of youth, an Indiana-Jonesish objective shared by a couple of other maritime powers. One is the King of Spain, who is enraged at the thought of the English getting it; another is the King of England (Richard Griffiths) who is enraged at the thought of a Catholic getting it. So our own stately George II engages a notorious rival pirate, Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) to head up the official Team GB effort. A deadly contest ensues.

Once again, Keith Richards gets his cameo as Sparrow’s dad, Captain Teague, and he gets one very nice line. Asked if he knows where the magic elixir is, Teague points to his ravaged face and snarls: “Does this look like the face of a man in possession of the spirit of eternal youth?” There has long been a view that Depp’s pirate is based on 60s Britrockers in general and Keef in particular. This isn’t entirely true.

Of course, the Depp/Sparrow look is loosely based on Keith Richards, but his voice and comedy shtick is taken from one person and one person only: Paul Whitehouse, in whose television comedy, The Fast Show, Depp appeared in 2000. Listen to Sparrow’s voice with its ironic tone, throwaway gag delivery and occasional Smashie-slur and you’ll hear the eerie similarity. It’s Whitehouse who deserves the iconic cameo, in my view, as well as a handsome copyright-royalty. However, perhaps it is my Brit-centric view that sees also a debt to Eric Morecambe in the scene where Sparrow finds himself face-to-face with a skull, which turns menacingly to face him, as if about to ask what he thinks of it so far.

On Stranger Tides, to give the film its specific title, is really quite long at just over two and a quarter hours, and some fans might feel that they are getting an awful lot of a good thing. But director Rob Marshall keeps the hellzapoppin’ atmosphere bubbling and gives you plenty of cannon-bang and cutlass-slash for your buck. There is less of a showcase for young, pretty people in this movie – the Orlando Bloom/Keira Knightley contingent – though there is a fetching young padre on board ship, who has a tendresse for a lovely mermaid, whose hair curls over her nipples in the traditional way. The emphasis here is on age and weatherbeaten experience. Of course, it is difficult to discern this or anything else clearly, given that the plot itself is so chaotic. There is sometimes a sense that what you are watching is a kaleidoscopic, two-hour-plus trailer. In the midst of the sensory assault, the shipborne battles and jungle-strife, I kept expecting the action to be interrupted with the booming gravelly voice “This summer …”

Some might find their enthusiasm for the Pirates films sinking. I have to say that mine is still there, just about. Depp’s Sparrow is a genuinely funny character and Depp still puts the ho-ho into yo-ho-ho. A must see movie this 2011.

Loki: the god of MISCHIEF @ THOR

Loki the god of MISCHIEF

Loki the god of MISCHIEF

Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of superhero: THOR. This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth. Kenneth Branagh directs this fantasy epic which stars Australian actor Chris Hemsworth as the ancient Norse god, Tom Hiddleston as his chaotic brother Loki, Natalie Portman as Jane Foster, a young woman who befriends Thor on Earth, and Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Thor’s father and king of Asgard. Expect to see agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., previously seen in ”Iron Man” to make an appearance, further forshadowing the coming of The Avengers!

It appears that a significant portion of the film will take place on Earth which counters some early reports indicating that the entire film will take place on Asgard with only the end on Earth. That of course, would be a waste of the talent of Natalie Portman so I am not surprised by this.

While on Earth, expect to meet some familiar faces and heroes including Agent Coulson (introduced in Iron Man) from S.H.I.E.L.D., Nick Fury and maybe a cameo by Tony Stark/Iron Man. If fans get their wishes, there’s still that rumor out there that Oscar-nominated Jeremy Renner could play Hawkeye who, according to the actor, would likely first appear in Thor. With the attention this actor has gotten in recent months, he would be an incredible addition to Marvel Studios’ line-up of onscreen heroes.

While keeping in mind what we know about Thor, our own Kofi Outlaw points out the possible downside in having some of the Marvel solo character movies spending time leading into The Avengers. Hopefully, and as we expect from Kenneth Branagh and co., this movie will act as a well-established and structured standalone epic that will work its own first and foremost, and as a sort of lead-in to the epic team up we all await.

That’s not all though; If you’re as excited as I am about the Kenneth Branagh production of Marvel’s God of Thunder, then check out this set report by writer/director Keri Collins who had the opportunity to shadow Branagh on set recently.

Red Riding Hood (2011)

Red Riding Hood 2011

Red Riding Hood 2011

Valerie (Amanda Seyfried) is a young woman living in the small village of Daggerhorn. She is in love with the woodcutter Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), but her parents Cesaire (Billy Burke) and Suzette (Virginia Madsen) have promised wealthy blacksmith Adrian Lazar (Michael Shanks) that Valerie will marry his son Henry (Max Irons) in order to pay a debt that Cesaire has with Adrian.

An unhappy Valerie plans to run away with Peter, but their plans are put on hold when the town sirens erupt, telling the couple that the werewolf who terrorizes their village has struck again. On closer inspection of the victim, it is found to be Lucy – Valerie’s older sister. The townspeople offer a monthly sacrifice to the beast and stay away from the woods but Lucy ventured there after discovering that Valerie had been promised an engagement to Henry, whom Lucy loves.

Adrian, Henry and Peter venture into the woods with several other men to hunt the wolf and manage to behead it, but Adrian is killed in the process. While helping Suzette to embalm Adrian’s body, Valerie discovers that they once had an affair and that Lucy is actually his daughter as well as Henry’s half-sister – the reason why she couldn’t be offered to him. Valerie also discovers Cesaire is seemingly unaware of this.

The townspeople decide to celebrate the death of the Wolf, but their festivities are interrupted by the arrival of famous witch hunter Father Solomon (Gary Oldman), who reveals that the townspeople did not slaughter the real Wolf because it would have changed back into its human form if they did. He then explains that since the Wolf can be wounded by objects made of silver, he has covered the fingernails of one of his hands with it.

Still, the townspeople decide to continue the celebration. But the festivities are once again interrupted by the arrival of the real Wolf, who goes on a rampage and kills several people. It is revealed that those bitten by the creature on the night of a blood full moon shall receive the curse as well. Valerie and her friend Roxanne (Shauna Kain) are cornered by the Wolf while attempting to get to the church, as the holy ground is a place of safety. The wolf then begins speaking to Valerie in growls that she can understand – much to her surprise – in addition to having very brown eyes. When the two arrive back at the village it is shown that one of Father Solomon’s guard is still alive – though he’s been bitten by the werewolf. Despite the guard’s brother’s protest, Father Solomon kills the guard in an attempt to save the town from yet another werewolf.

The following day, Roxanne’s autistic brother is arrested by Father Solomon, who believes him to be an accomplice of the Wolf due to the frantic state in which he was found after the attack. It is shown that Roxanne’s brother is put in to a large metal elephant with a fire burning underneath it – resembling a furnace. For her brother’s release Roxanne tells Father Solomon that Valerie can communicate with the Wolf. When led to her brother later on, it’s found he’s already dead from Father Solomon’s metal elephant. Meanwhile Father Solomon captures Valerie and uses her as a bait to lure the Wolf out of hiding, but she is rescued by Peter and Henry. While Henry detaches the chains locked on to Valerie’s arms, Peter sets the tower of which Father Solomon is in on fire. In the act Peter is caught and thrown in to the elephant, though the fire is not lit underneath it. Father Solomon’s men attempt to shoot at Valerie and Henry, and, in the ensuing mayhem, the Wolf appears, killing many more and following Valerie to the church, where it burns its paw upon entering. Father Solomon attempts to kill the Wolf, but has his hand bitten off and stolen by Valerie, who hides it in a basket. Having been bitten, Father Solomon is executed. Meanwhile, Valerie becomes convinced that her Grandmother (Julie Christie) who lives in a cabin in the woods and also has very brown eyes, is the Wolf and sets to destroy her and save the village.

On the way to her grandmother’s house, Valerie meets Peter – who has a glove on his hand. He explains what happened, and how he was able to get out of the elephant, but believing him to be the wolf attempting to hide his burned paw, Valerie stabs him with a knife she hides in her shoes and takes shelter in her grandmother’s house. When she arrives, it seems as though her grandmother is acting strangely and will not reveal herself to Valerie. It is then revealed that the wolf was neither Peter nor Valerie’s grandmother, but Cesaire as he pulls back the curtains, also showing himself to have been faking her grandmother’s voice. Cesaire explains to Valerie that he needs someone to pass his gift onto, as the blood moon is almost over. He explains he originally intended for it to be Lucy, however once she saw him, she remained frightened; revealing that she could not understand him. Any offspring of a wolf would have been able to understand. Upon this revelation, Cesaire acted out of rage and killed Lucy. (This also explains why the wolf clawed Valerie’s mother and murdered Adrian). In the nick of time, Peter comes to save Valerie, as Cesaire is intent on biting her. Cesaire bites Peter before being killed by Valerie, who stabs him with Father Solomon’s severed hand, which contained the silver fingernails. Valerie and Peter dispose of Cesaire’s body and Valerie chooses to remain living in her grandmother’s house and wait for Peter, who, fully aware that he’s cursed, retreats to the wilderness in order to learn how to control his power. Many years later, as Valerie leaves her grandmother’s (now her) cabin to pick some plants, she hears a sound. Looking up, she sees the Wolf (which is Peter). She smiles as they reunite.

But under a blood red moon, the wolf has upped the stakes by taking a human life. Hungry for revenge, the people call on famed werewolf hunter, Father Solomon (Oldman), to help them kill the wolf. But Solomon’s arrival brings unintended consequences as he warns that the wolf, who takes human form by day, could be any one of them. As the death toll rises with each moon, Valerie begins to suspect that the werewolf could be someone she loves. As panic grips the town, Valerie discovers that she has a unique connection to the beast–one that inexorably draws them together, making her both suspect…and bait.

si agimat at si enteng kabisote 2010

si agimat at si enteng kabisote 2010

SI AGIMAT AT SI ENTENG KABISOTE is a 2010 action comedy fantasy film directed by Tony Reyes which stars the two box office kings of Philippine cinema, Vic Sotto and Sen. Bong Revilla. Uniting their famous characters(Agimat and Enteng Kabisote) in one blockbuster movie which grossed a P31M on its opening day. SI AGIMAT AT SI ENTENG KABISOTE is an entry to the 2010 Metro Manila Filmfest.

There is trouble brewing in the world of Agimat and monsters are scaring and kidnapping children. The monsters seem capable of travelling in other worlds and Agimat is able to crossover with them to Encantasia, the world of Faye, Ina Magenta and our hero, Enteng Kabisote. The fairies wonder why monsters are able to cross worlds. Agimat is amazed of the other world and hopes that things in his world would turn out better. His dream one day is to have a happy family like Enteng’s. The story unfolds. Satana is the one ordering the monsters to snatch children so that she can use their blood to revive Ragat, the powerful lord of darkness. Satana will also need a blood of a fairy, and Faye is the perfect choice. Enteng now has to rescue his wife. And he will get Agimat to help him battle the monsters and the dark lord.

Opinions:

1.giddiness of Gwen Zamora; No one can do Ina Magenta justice than Charito Solis.

2.love teams unless integral to the story; Bea Binene demonstrated her martial arts prowess in a fight scene but having her and Jake Vargas in just a couple of scenes is ridiculous

3.never-been basketball stars as villains; not Benjie Paras, the other one

4.ER Ejercito; no one can play praning na adik (because paranoid addict just sounds too soft) better than him but I have heard quite a number of complaints in Laguna that our governor is an absentee public official; be good because election is just around the corner

5.sword fights; more fight scenes

6.Prinsipe K; Is he still around because I cannot think of another tap-dancing magical character?

7.special effects; better special effects

So do I want to live in their world? No. I chose the Kabisote residence over other magical places. Seriously, I love the banter between the Kabisotes and their house helpers. They make me want to live there while Agimat just makes me feel depress. (In a life and death situation, I’ll chose Enteng over the action star to save the world because he still comes out victorious despite product placements.) If it is indeed true that Filipinos dream simple (I do not subscribe to this.) – a house, a decent work and happy family – then the Kabisotes are living the dream. You feel good when it gets better and feel bad whenever someone breaks the Kabisote vibe.

Reaction

While the movie opened at #1 on December 25, 2010 with P31,000,000 in ticket sales, it was criticized for being predictable, having sexual innuendos, and having some home-truths as to how Filipino viewers idealize heroism and romance. Also noted is how the film tries to play fair when it comes to mixing the two heroes together.

In an online review, Philbert Ortiz Dy described Si Agimat at Si Enteng Kabisote as “really nothing more than a commercial proposition” and that it “took the two highest grossing stars of Filmfests prior and stuffed them together with little rhyme or reason, putting them in the same fantasy adventure settings that made them so successful. There’s precious little love to be found within these frames, all the elements of the film existing for the pure fact that they worked before. This doesn’t even feel like the movie the filmmakers wanted to make.”

Although the critical reception was not too good, the movie still ended making P159 million by the end of the festival and went on to have extended showings in theaters.

Tron Legacy 2010

The son of a virtual world designer goes looking for his father and ends up inside the digital world that his father designed. He meets his father’s creation turned bad and a unique ally who was born inside the digital domain of The Grid.

Tron: Legacy is a 2010 American science fiction film produced by Walt Disney Pictures, released on December 16, 2010 in Australia and December 17, 2010 in North America and Europe. It is a sequel to the 1982 film Tron. Joseph Kosinski makes his feature film directorial debut with Tron: Legacy, while the previous film’s director, Steven Lisberger, returns as a producer. Jeff Bridges reprises his roles as Kevin Flynn and Clu, while Bruce Boxleitner reprises his roles as Alan Bradley and Tron. Garrett Hedlund portrays Flynn’s adult son, Sam. The other cast members include Olivia Wilde, Beau Garrett, and Michael Sheen.

In 1989, Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges), an innovative software engineer and the CEO of ENCOM International, disappears. Twenty years later, his son, Sam (Garrett Hedlund), who became the controlling shareholder after his father’s disappearance, takes little interest in the company besides an annual practical joke on the board of directors. Sam is visited by his father’s friend and ENCOM executive Alan Bradley (Bruce Boxleitner), who urges Sam to investigate a mysterious pager message originating from Flynn’s old arcade. While exploring the arcade, Sam discovers a concealed computer laboratory and unintentionally transports himself to The Grid, a virtual world inside the computer.

Sam is captured and taken to the game arena. He is eventually pitted against Rinzler, the champion of the games, who notices that Sam is not a program, but a User. Rinzler takes him before Clu, a digital copy of Sam’s father who rules The Grid. Clu nearly kills Sam in a Light Cycle match before Quorra (Olivia Wilde) rescues him. Taken to a distant hideout in the “Outlands,” Sam is reunited with his father, who reveals that Clu betrayed him and defeated Tron, seizing control of The Grid and forcing Kevin to remain in hiding. Clu also committed genocide against sentient “isomorphic algorithms” (ISOs), self-produced programs that carried the potential to unlock mysteries in science, religion, and medicine, because Clu considered these ISOs to be an imperfection. When the portal closed, Flynn became a captive inside his own creation until Sam re-opened it from the outside.Resolving to make it back to the real world where he would be able to delete Clu, Sam makes his way back to The Grid to find a program named Zuse, whom he believes can provide safe passage to the portal. The End of Line Club owner—Castor (Michael Sheen)—is revealed to be Zuse and betrays Sam to Clu’s guards. Though Kevin and Quorra arrive just in time to help Sam escape, Quorra is wounded in the process and Zuse gains possession of Kevin’s identity disc. Knowing the disc works as a master key to The Grid, Zuse attempts to negotiate with Clu, but Clu simply takes it and destroys the club.

Stowing away on a transport ship, Kevin heals Quorra, who is revealed to be the last surviving ISO. The three unexpectedly arrive at a station aboard a massive warship. When Quorra allows Rinzler to capture her to serve as a distraction, Kevin recognizes Rinzler as a reprogrammed Tron. Clu addresses an army of troops, expressing his desire to enter the real world and reform it to his ideal of perfection.

Sam saves Quorra and reclaims Kevin’s disc. The trio then commandeer an aerial shuttle and are pursued by Clu, his guards and Rinzler using Light Jets. Between Quorra’s evasive flying and Sam manning the rear turret, they manage to shoot down Clu’s guards. During the conflict, Kevin and Rinzler make eye contact and Rinzler regains his true identity as Tron. Tron declares: “I fight for the users”, and he deliberately collides with Clu’s Light Jet, causing both of their vehicles to derezz. As they are falling, Clu wrestles away Tron’s spare baton and creates another light jet to continue his journey to the portal. Tron falls into the Sea of Simulation, where the orange illumination on his armor reverts back to his original blue. Sam, Kevin and Quorra reach the portal only to find Clu blocking their path. Kevin sacrifices himself to end the impasse, re-integrating with Clu to ensure Sam and Quorra escape. The two merge and explode just as Sam and Quorra use Kevin’s disc to transport themselves through the portal to the real world.

Back in the basement of Flynn’s Arcade, Sam saves a backup of The Grid onto his flash drive. He then meets Alan and tells him that he will start working at ENCOM, and, as the controlling interest shareholder, he will name Alan chairman of the board. Sam leaves with Quorra on his motorcycle, showing her the sunrise she has longed to see.

After a horrific car accident, Anna (Ricci) wakes up to find the local funeral director Eliot Deacon (Neeson) preparing her body for her funeral. Confused, terrified and feeling still very much alive, Anna doesn’t believe she’s dead, despite the funeral director’s reassurances that she is merely in transition to the afterlife. Eliot convinces her he has the ability to communicate with the dead and is the only one who can help her. Trapped inside the funeral home, with nobody to turn to except Eliot, Anna is forced to face her deepest fears and accept her own death. But Anna’s grief-stricken boyfriend Paul (Long) still can’t shake the nagging suspicion that Eliot isn’t what he appears to be. As the funeral nears, Paul gets closer to unlocking the disturbing truth, but it could be too late; Anna may have already begun to cross over the other side.

Confused. Disturbed. Intrigued. This is what you’ll get after watching After-Life, a suspense horror drama thriller flick that will surely haunt you even after you switch off your DVD player. First released in 2009, After.Life tells the story of a young school teacher, Anna (Christina Ricci) who ended up in a morgue after a horrific car accident. Believing she is (or was) still alive, Anna tried to escape Eliot Deacon, the funeral director (Liam Neeson) who introduced himself as the one “with the gift” who can talk to dead people. Paul (Justin Long), who is Anna‘s boyfriend already had the inkling that his girlfriend might still be alive and need his help. His suspicion grew more when Anna‘s student, Jack (Chandler Canterbury) informed him that he saw Anna by the window of the funeral home, wearing a red dress.

From start to ending, the mystery if Anna is still alive or not, still remains unfold. Even after the final scene where Paul and Anna finally got reunited, “their” death’s left numbers of questions hanging on. After searching the internet for more information about the movie, I stumbled upon different sites with arguments and questions about what really happened in the story. Glad to know that it wasn’t just me who got intrigued by this movie. One site even opens it’s home page with a phrase “If you want to see both a movie that keeps you guessing as to what’s really happening AND Christina Ricci naked – then After-Life is for you“. Well, this sounds true after all. In this movie, you’ll see scenes where Ricci exposes her petite yet luscious body. And this is just one reason why After-Life is worth watching. I’m not sure though if this film already landed in the Philippine cinema. But if not, you may want to score a DVD or Blu-ray copy instead and see for yourself why this movie is a little bit intriguing.

After-Life seems to be another movie wherein audiences are given some possibilities of their own versions to what really happened to the main characters in the story. This movie was released around November of 2009, and might be just in time for the All Souls Day.

Kris Aquino DALAW official entry of Metro Manila Film Fest 2010

DALAW 2010 official entry Metro Manila Film Fest 2010

DALAW 2010 official entry Metro Manila Film Fest 2010

I was curious why DALAW did not receive any nomination from the Metro Manila Film Fest 2010 judges. So I decided to watch this film to be able to give my verdict to the said movie, after all they say Kris is the queen of horror movie.

“Dalaw” is the story of Stella (Kris Aquino), a widow of four years whose violent husband died in a car accident while they were quarreling. She is now set to marry her high school sweetheart Anton (Diether Ocampo) with whom she has recently reconnected. From then however, Stella’s life becomes a living hell when a mud-coated ghost haunts her dreams. After their wedding, the torment escalates as actual deaths began to occur among the people around her. Stella, with the help of a spooky neighbor with a “third eye” Aling Olga (Ms. Gina Pareno), needs to discover how to stop the malevolent terror from destroying her life.

Kris Aquino just had her signature pained look plastered throughout the whole movie. She has not really progressed in her facial expressions through all these horror films she had. The way she shouts her son’s name Paolo and her anguished harsh screams were so over-the-top. A very big problem of the film was that Kris and Diether had absolutely NO chemistry. Their whole relationship as high school sweethearts was not believable at all. Their kissing scenes were very awkward-looking. This made the central premise of the story very shaky indeed. Come to think of it, Kris looked ill at ease with all the other actors as well.

A lot of the scary scenes were derivative. Some of the death scenes have already been done in previous films of the same genre, like the one in the sauna. The supporting character of Gina Pareno was written and executed in a comic horror style. Her Aling Olga looked like Mrs. Ganush of “Drag Me To Hell.” She likes quoting classic lines from Filipino movies when she makes her ominous pronouncements, which can be funny, but some of the humor is forced. Her exit was also very poorly written and realized. Among the other supporting actors, only Karylle made any kind of impact.

The movie was shot in very poor light. It seemed like most of the movie happened during the twilight to evening hours, which made a lot of scenes very hard to see. It was very strange that no one seemed to need to turn on the house lights at night! The director Dondon Santos depended heavily on typical horror effects like sudden camera shifts, dreary funereal music and too much darkness to achieve his scares. The final resolution had a corny feel to it because Kris was obviously fighting a solid “ghost”. Overall this movie was a dissatisfaction in the list of Kris Aquino horror films.
